Unpaid Workers Protest the Calloway High Rise on West Campus!

(Austin, TX) On Friday April 19th, over a hundred students and workers gathered to protest unfair working conditions at the University of Texas and West Campus.

Thirty construction workers walked off the job after going unpaid building student housing in West Campus and in San Antonio. These low-wage workers had over $33,000 stolen from their wages.

On Thursday April 18th, the contractors at the Calloway high rise compensated the unpaid workers the nearly $24,800 owed for their work on the high rise. Workers are still owed about $9,000 for building student housing for the University of Texas in San Antonio. Our community is glad that the developer and contractors have stepped up to the plate quickly to ensure workers are paid back a portion of what they're owed-- Now, it's up to us to call on the University of Texas and West Campus developers to ensure these serious workplace violations don't happen in the first place.

Workplace violations have become common in the construction of luxury student housing, with violations occurring on all three of West Campus' high rises. Three workers fell, one from six stories, last summer at the 24th and Nueces high-rise. At 21 Rio apartments in 2009, three young workers were killed when a scaffold collapsed.
