Robert Jensen on Capitalism v. Christianity: A Tale of Two Cults

Challenging the conventional wisdom of many secular and religious folk. University of Texas at Austin, Professor of Journalism, Dr. Robert Jensen argues that faith in the Cult of Capitalism is irrational and that a commitment to a reformulated Cult of Christianity (along with other religious traditions) is rational as we face up to the corrosive effects of modern life on human nature and the destructive effects of modern life on nature. As inequality and ecological collapse intensify, where do we look for values based on solidarity and sustainability? This talk is part of the First Unitarian Universalist Church’s weekly Public Affairs Forum. With the quality of political engagement at an all-time low—and threats to social justice and ecological sustainability at an all-time high—it has never been more important for citizens to be able to argue constructively. In this lively primer on critical thinking that draws on more than two decades of classroom experience and community organizing, Jensen offers practical advice on challenging the conventional wisdom and confronting the crises of our time.

Raiding Robert Jensen's Bookshelf - MonkeyWrench Books

On Saturday, July 7 2012 Robert Jensen talked about the books that have most influenced his own politics and discuss the importance of radical thought at MonkeyWrench Books. Last summer University of Texas professor Jensen confessed his hidden book-buying addiction, and MonkeyWrench helped him reduced the size of his library by holding a special one-day tent sale of about half of Jensen's collection. This summer, Jensen had to move into a new (and much smaller) office at UT, which means that most of the rest of his library had to go. Jensen's eclectic collection includes titles in media studies, politics, law, history, philosophy, religion, feminism, and critical race studies.

Robert Jensen on Talking Radical in a Mainstream World

On July 4, 2012 Robert Jensen gave a teach-in on Talking Radical in a Mainstream World for Occupy Austin's Independence Day gathering.

Occupy Austin (7/4/12) describes the goal of the gathering: "We are coming together to write a new declaration. A Declaration that reminds us of the uncertain road that those who founded our country followed. A Declaration that reminds us why we still believe in this great nation. A Declaration that reminds us what we still have left to achieve. A Declaration that reminds us that this country does now, has always and will always be of the people."
