Dana Cloud on “We Are the Union: Democratic Unionism and Dissent at Boeing”

University of Texas professor Dana Cloud’s http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~dcloud/ new book analyzes the opportunities and forces at play in modern unions. “We Are the Union” http://www.press.uillinois.edu/books/catalog/75sbt5ng9780252036378.html explains how workers at Boeing plants in Wichita and Seattle attempted to take command of their futures by chipping away at the cozy partnership between union leadership and corporate management. Focusing on the 1995 strike, Cloud describes the battles between the company and the union, and the struggles within the union led by Unionists for Democratic Change and two other dissident groups. Cloud calls for a revival of militant unionism as a response to union leaders’ embracing of management and training programs that put workers in the same camp as management.
