Tells the story of the Economy Furniture strike that lasted three years and
changed the city's political culture.
When a group of Latino workers sought better wages and working conditions
at the factory — at the time one of the largest in the nation — they braced
themselves for a walk through a hostile climate. The workers had no friends
at City Hall, none at the courthouse and very few at the Capitol.
They nonetheless pressed Milton and Helen Smith, the factory owners, for
the right to unionize. The Smiths were respected members of the Austin
business community who had racked up honors for their philanthropy. They
knew how to push back.
Rudy Malveaux activist, filmmaker, music lover and all around lovely
