Gustavo Melo Cerqueira has performed in films, soap operas, and theatrical plays in Brazil. He performed at Cia Teatro dos Novos for two years in the city of Salvador, Bahia, where he also worked as assistant director in several plays of Bando de Teatro Olodum. In the city of Rio de Janeiro, he worked with Companhia dos Comuns, a black theater group dedicated to the development of afro-Brazilian aesthetics in theater, where he held the functions of actor, assistant director, co-playwright, producer assistant, and researcher assistant. He is the author and director of the play OriRe - Saga um Herói que confrontou a Morte, held by INDEC - Instituto de Desenvolvimento Cultural do Ile Omiojuaro.  Gustavo has a Bachelor degree in Law at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil.  He is currently a graduate student in the Master's program at the African and African Diaspora Studies Department at UT Austin.
