From the Arab Spring in 2011, to the fight for collective bargaining in Madison, Wisconsin, to the Occupy Movement, the fight for justice for Trayvon Martin and the Chicago Teachers Union's struggle against Rahm Emmanuel's education deform agenda -- working people are learning the power of standing together in the age of austerity. The politics of Marxism have never been more relevant than they are today, and have a great deal to say about just how we can organize and fight back against capitalist crisis, the politics of austerity and institutional racism. Join people from all over the region as we debate and discuss how to fight racism and how to build a revolutionary party in the US.
Sessions include: A World in Crisis, A World in Struggle; Grave Digger of Capitalism: The Working Class and Revolutionary Consciousness; Capitalism and the Roots of Racism; Marxism and Organization; The Black Power Era; Building a Revolutionary Party in the United States; and Communists in the 30's: A Case Study in Fighting Racism.
Featured Speaker: Paul D'Amato, author of The Meaning of Marxism.
Plus Saturday evening activist panel--FIGHT BACK, LIVE BETTER: Organizing for a better Texas.
Speakers include: JOSH MATA (OUR Walmart, organizing Wal Mart workers in north Texas), LIZ CLINTON (Tar Sands Blockade, a coalition of Texas and Oklahoma landowners and climate justice organizers using peaceful civil disobedience to stop the construction of TransCanada’s Keystone XL tar sands pipeline), AINEE ATHAR (DREAM activist at the University of Texas fighting for the rights of undocumented youth), LORIE BARZANO (Coalition to Strengthen Austin Urban Schools, which came together to fight school closures at AISD), and AVA HAYWOOD (fighting for justice for her son who died in the custody of the Elgin Police Department).
