Jessica Gordon Nembhard on “African American Cooperative Thought and Practice” at 5604 Manor

Scholar/activist Jessica Gordon Nembhard will speak on the “long, strong, but hidden history” of African Americans in the cooperative movement.

Nembhard, a political economist and professor of Community Justice and Social Economic Development in the Department of African American Studies at John Jay College of the City University of New York, is the author of the forthcoming book Cooperative Ownership and the Struggle for African American Economic Empowerment: Alternative Strategies on the Economic Front. She is also co-editor of Wealth Accumulation and Communities of Color in the US: Current Issues.

Nembhard was a founding member of the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives and is co-founder of The Democracy Collaborative at the University of Maryland, College Park; the U.S. Solidarity Economy Network; and the Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy.
