From SPAIN- The first anniversary of Spain's May 15th social protest movement was celebrated across the country. For 4 days hundreds of thousands of citizens spoke out against inequality, high unemployment, and cuts in social spending. The World Wildlife Fund says that biodiversity has decreased by 28% globally since 1970. In Germany, Angela Merkel's conservative party suffered defeats in regional elections on Sunday, with the Greens and Social Democrats getting a majority in the state legislature of Westphalia. Greece will hold fresh elections on June 17th, and Greeks began withdrawing their money from banks.
From JAPAN- An Insight about the future of the Euro, in light of the possible withdrawal of Greece from the Eurozone. Tepco, the operators of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, admitted that they had known for 5 years that a tsunami could cause the backup generators to fail, causing a nuclear meltdown. Japan's Atomic Energy Commission has decided that recycling spent nuclear fuel is more expensive than burying it. 32,000 tons of radioactive sludge remain at initial storage sites, because waste disposal companies are refusing to accept it due to safety concerns. Paul Watson, a Canadian leader of the Sea Shepherd, has been arrested in Germany on a warrant issued by Costa Rica.
From CUBA- The US Treasury Department has tightened restrictions on trips to Cuba by non-Cuban-Americans, saying violators will be fined up to $65,000. Chilean students have begun a new series of protests against educational fees. The US killed 11 in two new drone attacks in Yemen, a country that it is not at war with. The Obama administration had decided to sell weapons to the government of Bahrain, despite the monarchy's repression of pro-democracy protests.
From RUSSIA- In Chicago, state, federal, and Special Forces troops have gathered to prevent demonstrators from interrupting the NATO summit being held there this weekend.

Six months after Occupy Wall Street began – when a few hundred people sparked worldwide protest with a march and sit-in in lower Manhattan against political corruption and corporate greed – OWS was back. And four months after Occupy encampments were brutally evicted around the country, the police were there to greet them. Demonstrators chanted “this is what democracy looks like” as cops dragged scores out of Zuccotti Park in downtown Manhattan. More accurate would have been “this is what a police state looks like.” At the same time, the sharpening internal contradictions within the Occupy movement were also on display.
In a recent and scary turn of events, TOR users have noticed a major problem with the majority of Indymedia connections/servers refusing TOR's HTTPS connections. ((i)Indymedia servers worldwide have suffered a severe issue with compromised servers and connections. They have recently installed new software that is being blamed in Chicago but this is only the tip on an iceberg and not the real story. For many that use Open Publishing this could be a very dangerous setting. Open Publishing with TOR offers a degree of security not afforded to non TOR users and with Indymedia servers refusing TOR connections you may not be safe using Indymedia to open publish. TOR users have noticed a severe security issue with IMC servers worldwide. In the US alone 26 IMC servers; Arizona, Arkansas, Asheville, Atlanta, Cleveland, Hawaii, Hudson Mohawk, Kansas City, Madison, Maine, Miami, Milwaukee, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New Orleans, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Portland, Richmond, San Fransisco, Sarasota, Tampa Bay, Tennessee, Vermont, and Worcester, fail to connect to TOR users, and 2 IMC sites have been click-jacked. In Canada, 10 IMC servers fail to connect with 1(Victoria), being click-jacked. In Europe the same problems occur. India, the same. Latin America, again, the same. We hope this is a mere technical issue, but given the FBI's tendency to stifle media this looks like a chilling example of spying on the unknowing who may use the tools that open publishing anonymously affords. There are a few Indymedia servers and sites that are open to TOR users, agian, a few. Does anyone know why this is happening? Any activist worth their salt should be using TOR.... or something like it. Every time we publish this news on any Indymedia site using non-HTTPS connections... they remove it! From SPAIN- Last weekend's elections in France, Greece, and Italy showed a significant shift in voter attitude toward the austerity measures imposed in the Eurozone. Nicolas Sarkozy became the 11th European leader to fall since the start of the economic crisis. You will hear the news, press reviews, and a discussion of the impact of these electoral changes in Europe. Then, Bolivia has said that it will pay a small sum, or nothing at all, for the Spanish electrical company which was nationalized last week.
From CUBA- A Viewpoint on a gathering of indigenous people from around the world at the UN. In the Americas there have been some recent gains for the native people of Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. But overall, the Colonial policies of extinction and domination still prevail today.
From JAPAN- Tepco, the company which owns and operates the Fukushima nuclear power plant, has been allowed to restructure to cover the huge expenses from the disaster last year- initially over $20 billion of taxpayers money will buy part of the company and pay out the first wave of compensation claims. A US research team has suggested burying all plutonium stockpiles underground to avoid the high cost of recycling the fuel.
From GERMANY- In the nuclear power plants of France, and several other European countries and Japan, the workers who perform the most dangerous maintenance are contract workers- this is done to avoid liability. In France these workers have formed an association and some are suing over workplace violations. Netherlands has passed a law restricting the sale of cannabis products to Dutch citizens only- it is in force in the South now, and is to go national next year.

From Veracruz to Austin and Back:
The journey of an immigrant

Since 1999 the ATCF quarterly program of solidarity delegations visiting maquiladora workers in Mexico at the border has examined the impact of free trade on real lives and communities. Our on-going relationship of solidarity with members of the Comit� Fronterizo de Obreras/os brought us behind news headlines and US policy rhetoric. Immigration within Mexico from South to North always fueled the border maquilas with workers. We saw border cities double their populations, many with migrants from Veracruz.
Now, teaming up with sister organization, Women on the Border, our May 2012 delegation will swivel the perspective to see what happens when Mexican and Central American immigrants cross the border into the US. In Austin we will learn about a labor system that practices wage theft on immigrants without documents and how they assert their rights. We will hear from immigrants as well as US citizens who lose their basic human rights when they are pulled into the US's detention system and sometimes deported.
In South Texas we will visit an immigration detention center and speak with local people as well as activist/advocates to understand the economic bribe that detention centers offer poor Texas communities. We will stop overnight at the UFW/La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) campus east of McAllen to learn about services that UFW and the Texas Civil Rights Project offer recent immigrants. At The Wall the Sierra Club will explain environmental and social hazards.
Throughout we will question and discuss US policies that hold this immigrants� nightmare in place.

We will speculate why the federal government is so unable to �fix a broken system.�

Meanwhile, approximately 600 corporate lobbyists have been given "cleared advisor" status giving them regular access to the documents and the negotiators.
Wall Street banks and other corporate interests are pushing for the TPP to:
• Offshore good-paying jobs to low-wage nations and undercut working conditions globally
• Create new tools for attacking environmental and consumer safety policies
• Expand the deregulation of banks, hedge funds and insurance companies
• Further concentrate global food supplies into the hands of fewer-and-fewer giant middlemen
• Institute longer patents that restrict access to affordable, generic medications

In Vienna, the mayor of Nagasaki again called on the world to abolish nuclear weapons. Pakistan condemned another US drone attack which killed 4 last Sunday.
From GERMANY- An American counter-terrorism official defended President Obama's use of targeted drone strikes. A British Parliamentary committee said that Rupert Murdoch was not fit to run a major media corporation. Two stories on the final round of France's Presidential election to be held this Sunday.
From CUBA- Following the Argentine take over of a Spanish oil company, Bolivia has nationalized the Spanish owned power company. Last Sunday, tens of thousands of Spanish citizens took to the streets to protest austerity measures in education and health care. On Tuesday, May Day protests took place around the world. A 3 year long US Congressional probe has found that the torture practices employed by the CIA have not led to significant intelligence gains.
From RUSSIA- In the US 7 million people owe a total of 1 trillion dollars for student loans. This has surpassed the total amount owed on credit cards in the US. A week ago students around the country staged an "Occupy Student Debt" campaign on campuses.
